The Southern Rock Cruise is an Intimate Festival at Sea
Guests heading off on the Southern Rock Cruise know they’re in for something special. 5 nights and 4 days of the ultimate Southern Rock experience with concerts every day and every night, topped off by Lynyrd Skynyrd performing exclusively for us in Jamaica. We love catching Skynyrd, 38 Special, the Marshall Tucker Band and all the other Southern Rock Cruise bands in any place and at any time, but it’s a pretty big rarity when all of them get together like this for a series of concerts in front of such a small audience. How rare? We took a look at some of the biggest crowds our Southern Rock Cruise bands have played in front of and were blown away.
Lynyrd Skynyrd rocked the Oakland Coliseum, with 63,000 seats, in July 1977. Just one year earlier (and 3,000 miles away), they filled RFK Stadium in Washington, DC (45,000 seats).
38 Special commemorated their massive Buffalo Chip concert at Sturgis in 1999 with a live album. The campground keeps their audience size a closely guarded secret, but with half a million people arriving in Sturgis that year, it’s not too hard to figure out how many showed up to see them.
In 1977, The Marshall Tucker Band teamed up with Sea Level (featuring members of the Allman Brothers Band) and the Grateful Dead to play before 150,000 fans in Englishtown, New Jersey at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The Band finally released a “Live From Englishtown” album in 2014.
55,000 people filled Giants Stadium to see The Outlaws in the summer of 1979. Although it rained on Poco and Todd Rundgren that day, the skies cleared for The Outlaws (and Boston).
Molly Hatchet joined AC/DC, Cheap Trick, and The Babys that same summer at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecantonica, IL which held an estimated crowd of 50,000.
Over 110,000 people flocked to the massive Canada Jam festival in late August, 1978, where the Atlanta Rhythm Section took the stage.
The Southern Rock Cruise will be an intimate floating festival at sea with the Southern Rock’s legends performing just for us - we look forward to seeing you in less than four months from now!
